Thermally Conductive Thermoplastic is designed to move heat away from sensitive devices

Thermally conductive thermoplastic moves heat efficiently

Info-gel's new silicone-free Heat DefenderTM thermoplastic materials are used in the industry to move heat away from sensitive devices.  The thermoplastic becomes a liquid at temperatures between 100-130oC (depending on formulation) and can easily be molded into shapes or films.  When cooled, it becomes a solid, tack-free, rubber material that is easily reworked by increasing the temperature or peeling off the material.  This material has been designed to work between -50oC and 90oC.

To look at an example of how the material works, Info-gel used a thermal imaging camera to examine the temperature change from an 80oC plate to a metal heat spreader.

In the first picture, you can see the heated plate at 80oC.  We then add on a standard thermoplastic material with a thermal conductivity of 0.15 W/mK and a metal heat spreader on top.   The second picture is the temperature of the metal heat spreader at time 0....it is at 31oC.  The third picture shows the metal heat spreader after 1hr.  The temperature has increased from 31oC to 46oC  showing that at 0.15W/mk the temperature increase of the heat spreader was 15oC.

We then ran a similar trial using a Heat DefenderTM  thermally conductive thermoplastic at 1 W/mK.  In the first picture, you can again see the plate maintained at 80oC.  The 1 W/mK thermoplastic and a metal heat spreader was then added to the stack.  Picture 2 shows the temperature at the top of the plate at time 0 at 32oC.  The third picture shows the metal heat spreader after 1 hr has passed.  The heat spreader temperature has increased from 32oC to 61oC showing that at 1 W/mK the temperature increase of the heat spreader was 29oC, or almost double the increase of the 0.15 W/mK material.
